This patent, titled "TRANSLATION OF SIGN LANGUAGE IN A VIRTUAL ENVIRONMENT," details a system enabling seamless communication between gamers using different sign languages, such as American Sign Language (ASL) and Japanese Sign Language (JSL).
The proposed system facilitates real-time translation during in-game interactions. On-screen avatars or indicators would visually represent the translated sign language. The process involves a three-step translation: sign language to text, text translation between languages, and finally, text to the target sign language. This ensures accurate and fluid communication.
"The present disclosure covers methods and systems for capturing a user's sign language (e.g., Japanese) and translating it for another user (e.g., English)," explains Sony's patent application. "Since sign languages vary geographically, a system is needed to accurately capture, interpret, and generate the appropriate sign language output for each user."
Sony envisions utilizing VR headsets (HMDs) or similar devices to capture sign language input. "The HMD would connect, wired or wirelessly, to a user device (PC, game console, etc.), rendering immersive graphics within the virtual environment," the patent specifies.
Furthermore, Sony suggests a networked system where user devices communicate with a game server. "The game server manages the game's state and virtual environment, synchronizing user devices," the patent explains. This shared environment allows for simultaneous interaction between players. The patent also proposes integrating this system with cloud gaming, where the server streams video to each user device. This allows for seamless cross-platform interaction and translation.
