Recent layoffs at BioWare, the developers of Dragon Age: The Veilguard, have sparked a much-needed conversation about the current state of the gaming industry. Larian Studios' publishing director, Michael Daus, has again taken to social media to address these unsettling trends. He argues that the industry needs to prioritize employee value and hold leadership accountable for decisions that result in widespread job losses.

Daus points out the avoidable nature of massive layoffs between projects or post-release. He emphasizes the critical importance of retaining institutional knowledge—the collective experience and expertise within a team—which is essential for future success. While acknowledging the financial pressures that sometimes necessitate restructuring, he questions the aggressive efficiency strategies employed by large corporations, suggesting they often lead to unnecessary job losses. This, he argues, is particularly problematic when companies aren't consistently releasing successful titles. Layoffs, he contends, are a drastic, short-sighted cost-cutting measure.

Daus highlights the inherent unfairness of the system, where those at the top make strategic decisions that disproportionately impact lower-level employees. He uses the analogy of a pirate ship, suggesting that, much like the captain being the first to be thrown overboard in times of crisis, companies should hold leadership accountable for their strategic failures rather than sacrificing the very people who build their games. The management of video game companies, he concludes, needs a fundamental overhaul.
