EA's highly anticipated Skate revival will mandate a persistent online connection.
In a refreshed FAQ on the official blog, developer Full Circle confirmed: "The game and its city are designed as a dynamic, evolving massively multiplayer skateboarding experience that requires constant online connectivity. Expect everything from large-scale city transformations to smaller live events and in-game activities."
This always-online requirement means offline play won't be possible, even for solo skaters avoiding multiplayer. Full Circle emphasizes this design choice aligns with their vision of "a connected skateboarding world that demands an active internet connection at all times."
"This shouldn't come as a shock if you've participated in our recent playtests," the developer noted.
Since September 2024, the team has been running an Always-On Playtest phase, maintaining servers 24/7 to evaluate the live game environment.
While Skate's early access launch is confirmed for 2025, no specific date has been announced. Originally revealed during EA Play in 2020 as an early development project, Full Circle has gradually involved the community through closed beta tests and recently introduced microtransactions.
Players can purchase San Van Bucks (SVB), an in-game currency for cosmetic items. Full Circle aims to refine the microtransaction system during testing, stating: "We want players to have seamless purchasing experiences in the Skate store."
"Using real money in playtests might seem unusual, but it's crucial for optimizing the system before launch. Prices and mechanics may adjust during testing, and all SVB expenditures will carry over when we reset for Early Access," the team clarified in today's update.
