Possibility of Expansions or Sequels

The release of Avowed has been a triumph, with both Microsoft and Obsidian expressing satisfaction with its sales performance. In a recent interview with Bloomberg on February 22, 2025, Game Director Carrie Patel discussed the potential for expanding the Avowed universe.

Although no official announcements have been made, Patel expressed a keen interest in continuing to direct and create within this world. She stated, "Now that we’ve built this wonderful world, and also built this team strength and muscle memory around the content and gameplay in this world, I’d love to see us do more with it." This suggests exciting prospects for future expansions or even a sequel to Avowed.

Changes in Avowed During Development

The journey to Avowed's final form was filled with challenges and significant changes. Patel shared insights into the development process, describing it as "messy" but ultimately rewarding.

Initially started in 2018, the project faced hurdles as Obsidian contemplated selling the company. Despite previous successes with titles like Fallout: New Vegas and Pillars of Eternity, the challenges of remaining independent were daunting. Microsoft's acquisition in 2020 marked a turning point, leading to the game's announcement. However, the development team had to make tough decisions, including cutting several features and abandoning the multiplayer aspect. In January 2021, a leadership change and project reboot were necessary.

Under Patel's leadership, managing a team of over 80 people became a central challenge. She explained, "Normally if you’re stepping back and reevaluating your creative direction, putting together a new vertical slice and revised production plans, you would do that with a very small team." Patel's vision for Avowed focused on enhancing the story and lore from the Pillars of Eternity franchise, and shifting from an open world to open zones, allowing for richer, more detailed environments.

Reflecting on the development process, Patel noted, "There’s this interesting thing I’ve seen on every project I’ve worked on or seen during my time at the studio — things are messy, messy, messy, then they start coming together."

Obsidian Wants Pillars of Eternity Tactics

With Avowed bringing the Pillars of Eternity franchise back into the spotlight, Obsidian is exploring new avenues for expansion. During a Twitch Livestream on February 23, 2025, Pillars of Eternity and Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire Director Josh Sawyer revealed the studio's interest in developing a tactics game set in the Pillars of Eternity universe.

Sawyer commented, "Pillars: Tactics is a thing that a lot of people would like, a lot of people at the studio would like to work on; there are a lot of people who like tactics games." However, he acknowledged the challenges in determining the project's scope, including team size, visual quality, and overall scale.

Despite these hurdles, there is a clear interest among developers to create a tactics game for the franchise. The success of Avowed has reinvigorated interest, making this a potential future project.

Additionally, Sawyer expressed his ambition to develop Pillars of Eternity 3 with a budget comparable to Baldur’s Gate 3's $100 million, a significant leap from the budget of Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire.
