ILL Developer Interview Insights
Drawing from Half-Life 2, Silent Hill, and Resident Evil Legacy
As Team Clout's debut project, ILL consciously channels elements from iconic horror titles. In a PlayStation.blog interview on July 7, the developers detailed their creative approach.
First revealed during Summer Game Fest 2025, this first-person survival horror immediately caught attention with its disturbing environments, brutal combat, and nightmarish creatures reminiscent of genre greats.
Game Director Maxim Verehin describes ILL as: "A narrative-driven horror experience blending visceral visuals, disturbing moments, creative inspiration, exploration and bold concepts - merging survival horror tension with intense first-person combat."
The team carefully balances "heart-stopping terror" with "adrenaline-fueled action sequences featuring refined shooting mechanics and graphic dismemberment."
Though new to game development, Team Clout brings horror expertise from film/TV projects like Longlegs and It: Welcome to Derry. Their goal was crafting a world that feels "genuinely threatening," heavily inspired by legendary horror franchises.
"We wanted that oppressive realism of being trapped somewhere hostile," Verehin explains. "This world should feel disturbingly tangible, leaving players unsettled long after gameplay ends."
Marrying Hyperreal Horror with Reactive Environments
Beyond shocking visuals, Team Clout prioritized profound storytelling centered on the protagonist's dark journey. Verehin states: "The atmosphere should feel utterly desolate and bleak. We want players connecting emotionally with our lead character's disturbing motivations."
The developers aim for physical discomfort beyond scripted scares. "Our differentiation comes from combining hyperreal body horror with environmental reactivity," Verehin notes. "Enemies don't simply perish - they suffer, evolve, transform. Every action creates lasting consequences."
Evolutionary Monsters and Survival Mechanics
The title itself connects deeply to narrative and creature design. Verehin explains: "We sought something instantly iconic yet disturbing. 'ILL' represents sickness, corruption, damnation. Without spoiling origins, there's brilliant cohesion between title and lore."
For creature design, Key Artist Oleg Vdovenko cites classic practical horror effects: "We studied 1970s-90s films, their ingenious animatronics and atmospheric lighting masking imperfections."
Monsters were designed with gameplay impact, ensuring satisfying combat. The team collaborated with Atomic Heart developers Mundfish for horror-specific expertise.
Survival elements include resource gathering, inventory management, and weapon upgrades alongside environmental puzzles affecting gameplay.
The arsenal includes standards like shotguns and rifles alongside creative makeshift weapons. Verehin emphasizes accessibility: "We're crafting this experience for both horror enthusiasts and players seeking compelling storytelling with intense action."
ILL is currently in development for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Stay updated with our latest coverage below!
