Dune: Awakening Devs Detail Sandworm Mechanics

By JasonMay 12,2025

In Dune: Awakening, sandworms are portrayed as a formidable natural force rather than controllable tools that players can summon at will. Unlike the iconic scenes from Frank Herbert's novels where characters use a thumper to call upon these massive creatures, this mechanic will not be available in the game. Instead, sandworms function as NPCs with predefined patrol routes, schedules, and behaviors integrated into the game's engine.

Players cannot intentionally summon a sandworm near an enemy base to disrupt opponents' strategies. However, if a sandworm is already in the vicinity, players might attract its attention by moving actively through the sand or using a thumper. Even with these actions, there's no guarantee that a sandworm will appear in the area.

Riding sandworms, a staple of the Freman culture as depicted in Herbert's books and the Dune cinematic universe, will not be a feature in Dune: Awakening at launch. The developers have stated that pressure from the filmmakers behind the Dune movies influenced their decision to omit this iconic activity. However, there is potential for post-launch patches to introduce more content related to Freman culture, which might include worm-riding mechanics. As it stands, there's no guarantee that players will get to experience this thrilling aspect of the Dune universe.
