Space Marine 2 Modding Begins: Tau, Necrons, and Unexpected Fishing Mini-Game Added

By MaxMay 25,2025

Fans of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2* are buzzing with excitement following the developer's decision to grant modders access to their internal editor, sparking hopes that the game could achieve long-lasting success through user-generated content, much like *Skyrim*. Game director Dmitry Grigorenko announced this significant step on the Space Marine 2 modding Discord, heralding it as "our biggest milestone yet in supporting the modding community."

Saber Interactive has released the official Integration Studio for public use, providing the same tools used by developers for all aspects of gameplay development. This initial release empowers modders to work on everything from level scenarios and game modes to AI behavior, abilities, melee combos, user interfaces, and HUD elements, making the modding process for *Space Marine 2* more efficient and accessible.

Grigorenko expressed his enthusiasm, saying, "Not long ago, I promised we would support the modding scene — and we meant it. Watching this community grow, push boundaries, and create incredible experiences has been both inspiring and humbling. We’re excited to see what you build next — whether it’s a cinematic campaign, wild new game mode, or something we never saw coming."

To kick things off, Grigorenko shared humorous concept art for a "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game, featuring Marneus Calgar, leader of the Ultramarines. This playful challenge has ignited a race among modders to create the game's first fishing mini-game.

To understand the community's plans for the editor, I spoke with Tom, known as Warhammer Workshop, the modder behind *Space Marine 2’s* acclaimed *Astartes Overhaul*. Fresh from launching a 12-player co-op mod, Tom now has access to all scripting tools that control mission dynamics and game components such as weapons and abilities.

This access could lead to innovative mods like a roguelite mode where players start with just a combat knife and face increasingly difficult enemies, with chances to gain weapons, ammo, and health upon defeating foes. Tom suggested, "Killing a Carnifex might grant you a Heavy Bolter."

While a new cinematic campaign featuring Chaos is feasible, Tom noted that creating cutscenes remains challenging due to limited access to animation tools. However, he's planning to introduce new factions like the Tau and Necrons, utilizing available rigs.

The modding community is eagerly working on the "Fishing With Daddy Calgar" mini-game challenge set by Grigorenko.

The reaction from *Space Marine 2* fans has been overwhelmingly positive. Although the game is a bestseller and well-received, it initially offered only three factions: Space Marines, Chaos (including Chaos Marines and Tzeentch Daemons), and the Tyrannids. Fans had hoped for DLC to expand the faction roster, especially after the campaign teased the Necrons. Now, with the modding tools at their disposal, players can take the initiative to expand the game's universe.

Redditor Mortwight commented, "This is how you keep a game alive for years like Skyrim," highlighting the potential for *Space Marine 2* to have a prolonged lifespan through modding.

This development is particularly timely given Saber and publisher Focus Entertainment's announcement of *Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3* being in development. Some fans expressed concerns about the future of *Space Marine 2* DLC, but both Saber and Focus have reassured the community that they are not abandoning the game. With the modding editor now in the hands of the community, *Space Marine 2* is poised for an extended life cycle.
