"Kingdom Come Deliverance 2's Storyline Gets a 1/10 for Realism from Historical Consultant"

Joanna Novak, the historical consultant for Kingdom Come: Deliverance 2, provided valuable insights into her work on both installments of the acclaimed series. She candidly discussed the challenges and compromises that came with translating historical authenticity into a compelling video game narrative.

Novak pointed out that the game's storyline, which follows protagonist Hendrich, deviates significantly from what life would have been like for a blacksmith's son during the 15th century. She rated the plot's realism at a mere "1 out of 10 on the realism scale," emphasizing that the narrative leans more towards legend and folklore than historical truth.

According to Novak, the developers chose to craft a rags-to-riches story where the hero, Hendrich, rises through the ranks, interacts with historical figures, and achieves greatness. This approach, while not historically accurate, resonates well with players who prefer engaging, aspirational tales over the mundane realities of peasant life.

In terms of world-building and environment, Warhorse Studios strived for authenticity in Kingdom Come: Deliverance. However, Novak acknowledges that time, budget constraints, and gameplay demands necessitated some compromises. Adjustments were made to cater to modern player expectations, ensuring that historical accuracy did not compromise the game's enjoyment.

Despite these compromises, Novak remains satisfied with the inclusion of many period-appropriate details. Nonetheless, she cautions against labeling the game as realistic or historically accurate, as doing so would be misleading to players.
