New screenshots have emerged showcasing Everwild, the highly anticipated fantasy game that spent over a decade in development before its cancellation by Xbox earlier this summer.
Everwild was being developed by Rare, the studio behind Sea of Thieves, a veteran British team known for creating numerous classic titles. However, the long-incubating project was terminated in July amid a broader wave of layoffs and cancellations within Microsoft.
A collection of new Everwild screenshots has now appeared online through the portfolio of a former employee. According to MP1st, these images are believed to represent a build of the game relatively close to its cancellation, featuring a silver-haired protagonist exploring ancient ruins within a forest.
While previous teaser trailers have offered brief glimpses of Everwild, Rare has always been notably secretive about the actual gameplay mechanics. Nevertheless, clues can be gathered from the game's inventory screen, which reveals an extensive array of items and navigation tabs.
The inventory includes categories such as "favorites," "figments," "tools," "mosaics," "seeds," and "plants." Figments appear to be plant-based creatures—somewhat reminiscent of Pikmin, though with distinctive onion-shaped heads. One pale green entity is identified as a "Light Figment," with additional variants displayed in blue, white, and brown.
The game's comprehensive seed catalog features items like the "Shrub Seed," used for cultivating shrubs. Meanwhile, mosaics include creatures previously seen in Everwild teasers, such as a deer-like animal adorned with a large orange crest.

A settings menu is also visible, which reportedly would have utilized Sea of Thieves player data to recommend common gameplay configurations.
Everwild was conceived as a third-person fantasy adventure game with god-game elements, though its development underwent multiple shifts, including a complete reboot following the departure of creative director Simon Woodroffe in 2020. Rare appointed veteran designer Gregg Mayles, known for his work on Donkey Kong Country, Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves, to fill the director role. Mayles is now believed to have left the studio entirely following Everwild's cancellation.
What lies ahead for Rare? Beyond Sea of Thieves, the studio's future remains uncertain. A recent Community Direct broadcast indicated that the developer is intensifying its focus on the pirate-themed live service game, with plans to support it for at least several more years. A new revenue stream for the title is also scheduled to launch in early 2026, introducing a paid subscription for accessing custom servers.
