Back in early April, fans of the Nintendo Switch 2 noticed references to variable refresh rate (VRR) on the system's informational pages, which were quickly removed. Nintendo has now provided clarity on the VRR functionality for the Nintendo Switch 2.
In a statement to NintendoLife, Nintendo confirmed that the initial information about VRR was inaccurate: "Nintendo Switch 2 supports VRR in handheld mode only. The incorrect information was initially published on the Nintendo Switch 2 website, and we apologize for the error."
Regarding potential VRR support in docked mode via a future firmware update, Nintendo stated they have "nothing to announce on this topic."
Thus, while the Switch 2 does offer VRR in handheld mode, users connecting their console to a TV will not benefit from this feature at launch.
This clarification follows a period of confusion, with the initial VRR mention being spotted and then promptly deleted. The gradual disappearance of these references from various sites was documented by Digital Foundry contributor Oliver Mackenzie.
Although this news may disappoint those eager for VRR support in the Switch 2's TV mode at launch, there's still hope for future updates. Sony, for example, added VRR support to the PS5 post-launch, suggesting a similar possibility for the Switch 2.
In other Switch 2 developments, Nintendo has released a list of games set to receive free performance upgrades on the Switch 2, including titles like Pokémon Scarlet & Violet and Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury. Additionally, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, has assured that the company will have sufficient Switch 2 units to meet demand "through the holidays."
