The Missed Opportunity for Connected Marvel Games
While the Marvel Cinematic Universe revolutionized interconnected storytelling across films and TV shows, Marvel's video game adaptations have always existed as standalone experiences. Even recent acclaimed titles like Insomniac's Spider-Man games share no narrative connection with other Marvel game franchises. This wasn't always the plan though - Disney once envisioned creating a unified Marvel Gaming Universe (MGU) with storylines crossing between titles.
The Almost-Reality of Gaming Crossovers
Former Disney game executive Alexander Seropian and Marvel writer Alex Irvine recently revealed fascinating details about this abandoned initiative on The Fourth Curtain podcast. Seropian, best known as Bungie's co-founder, pushed for an interconnected gaming universe during his tenure at Disney, but couldn't secure necessary funding.
"We developed brilliant concepts for making this work," Irvine recalled. "The idea was creating a shared hub where players could transition between games while incorporating comics and original content." Their ambitious vision included transmedia storytelling elements inspired by alternate reality games.

Complexities That Sank the MGU
The team faced significant creative challenges establishing this shared universe while distinguishing it from existing Marvel comics and movies canon. According to Irvine, "These fundamental questions became so complex that they ultimately deterred Disney's decision-makers."
Had the MGU launched, we might've seen Spider-Man appearing in Square Enix's Avengers or Guardians of the Galaxy titles, all building toward epic crossover events. Currently, fans wonder whether Marvel's Wolverine will share continuity with Insomniac's Spider-Man games.
Ultimately, the Marvel Gaming Universe joins gaming history's pile of unrealized concepts - though perhaps thriving in some alternate universe's timeline.
