Fast X Sequel Awaits Major Budget Cuts

By JasonDec 26,2025

Everyone enjoys the Fast and the Furious franchise, but Universal Studios has specific conditions before funding the series finale, especially concerning the film's massive budget.

More than two years after Fast X, the Wall Street Journal reports that the next movie hasn't been officially announced, lacking both a confirmed release date and a finalized script. Additionally, many key cast members have yet to sign contracts for their return.

So, what's the hold-up? Reports indicate the current script would require a budget of around $250 million. The studio has reportedly informed the filmmakers that production won't be approved until the budget is reduced by 20%. This hesitation stems from the performance of 2023’s Fast X, which became the franchise's lowest-grossing film in over a decade, earning $705 million against a $340 million budget.

The sequel, initially promoted as Fast X: Part Two, was originally scheduled for release this year. Vin Diesel, the series' lead, stated last summer that the film would debut in April 2027, though this date remains unconfirmed by official sources.

Last June, Diesel discussed the upcoming installment during his appearance at Fuel Fest, a car enthusiast event in Los Angeles.

“The studio asked me, ‘Vin, can we release the Fast and Furious finale in April 2027?’” Diesel told the audience. “I agreed, but under three conditions. First, bring the franchise back to Los Angeles! Second, return to the core car culture and street racing! Third, reunite Dom and Brian O’Conner.”

Given that the late Paul Walker portrayed Brian O’Conner, it's unclear how Diesel intends to reintegrate the beloved actor and his character into the series. Let's hope this doesn't involve a digital recreation of his likeness—a move that would likely be unpopular with fans.

Another uncertainty is the potential involvement of Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson. In January, Vin Diesel retracted a jab he made at Johnson during a presentation at the 2025 Golden Globes. Diesel later posted an old photo of the two on Instagram with the caption "All love... Always," following his on-stage comment that playfully referenced their well-known feud, which drew laughter from the audience.
