With the success of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered, speculation is rife about which Bethesda game will be next in line for a remaster. Many believe it could be Fallout 3, especially after a leak in 2023. Bruce Nesmith, a designer on the original Fallout 3, has suggested several ways Bethesda could enhance the 2008 post-apocalyptic RPG.
Nesmith pointed out that the gun combat in Fallout 3 was "not good" and anticipates significant improvements in a remastered version. He noted that Fallout 3 Remastered would likely feature shooting mechanics more akin to those in Fallout 4. "What did you see in Fallout 4? That will tell you what they felt was necessary to change from Fallout 3," Nesmith explained to VideoGamer. He praised the extensive work done on gun combat in Fallout 4, acknowledging that Fallout 3 was Bethesda's first foray into a shooter-style game.
Oblivion Remastered, developed by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, set a high standard with its array of enhancements. Running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, it not only boasts improved visuals but also significant gameplay upgrades. These include refined leveling systems, enhanced character creation, better combat animations, and revamped in-game menus. Additionally, there's new dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology. Fans have been so impressed that some consider it more of a remake than a remaster, though Bethesda has clarified its decision to label it as a remaster.
Nesmith believes Fallout 3 Remastered would follow a similar path of comprehensive updates. He noted that the original game's combat didn't compare well with other shooters of its time, but the improvements made in Fallout 4 could be integrated into a remastered Fallout 3. "Oblivion wasn’t just brought up to the 2011 version of Skyrim," Nesmith remarked, "It was brought up to something that, at least on the surface, looks like it exceeds the most recent graphics update in Skyrim." He even suggested that Oblivion Remastered could be considered "Oblivion 2.0."
Bethesda's current workload is extensive, with ongoing projects like The Elder Scrolls VI and potentially more content for Starfield. Alongside remasters, they're also maintaining Fallout 76 and are involved with the Fallout TV show, which is set to explore New Vegas in its second season. This lineup promises an exciting future for fans.
