As Destiny 2 developer Bungie works to salvage its reputation following new allegations of artwork appropriation in Marathon, players are questioning the game's future. Another independent artist recently claimed the studio improperly used their creative work, prompting Bungie to acknowledge a "former artist" used Fern Hook's designs without permission or credit.

A Painful Public Apology

Last Friday, Marathon's game director Joe Ziegler and art director Joe Cross delivered an awkward livestream apology without showing any game footage. The team explained they were thoroughly reviewing all assets to avoid further copyright issues.

Since the revelation, the community has been speculating about the unnamed former artist's identity while debating whether Marathon can recover from this controversy. Some players express disillusionment, with one stating: "The game went from mixed reception to being associated with plagiarism just months before launch. Without a delay, it's doomed at release."

Financial analysts warn about disastrous consequences, estimating potential losses exceeding $100 million for a AAA title. "This threatens Bungie's very existence," one commenter emphasized.

Could History Repeat Itself?

The situation draws uncomfortable parallels to last year's Concord debacle, where Sony pulled Firewalk Studios' hero shooter shortly after its disastrous launch. Some players now fear similar outcomes for Marathon, while others maintain cautious optimism.

While some remain excited for Marathon's release, noting that "all art builds on existing influences," the controversy has clearly shaken confidence. Forbes reports plummeting morale at Bungie as the studio prepares for Marathon's September 23 launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S.

Amid the turmoil, one fan reflected: "Most affected will be innocent employees who don't deserve punishment. I want to see Bungie make things right with artists and regain trust - through delays if necessary. I genuinely want this game to succeed."
