"Video Game Console Sales Plummet in Key Region"

Summary

  • Major gaming console sales in Europe dropped in 2024 due to market saturation and a lack of new releases.
  • The PlayStation 5 Pro was the only new console from major companies, but it couldn't prevent the overall sales decline.
  • Overall gaming sales in Europe saw only a 1% increase in 2024, with digital sales rising and physical copies falling.

2024 was a challenging year for video game consoles in several European markets, affecting all major platforms including the Nintendo Switch, Xbox, and PlayStation. Despite the launch of new hardware, the overall trend for console sales in the region was downward. However, the gaming industry as a whole did not fare entirely poorly.

The only new console released by the major gaming companies in 2024 was the PlayStation 5 Pro, an enhanced version of the existing PS5. While this attracted many Sony fans eager for a more powerful console, it was not enough to reverse the declining sales trend in Europe compared to previous years.

According to a report by Video Games Chronicle, data shows that sales of the PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch all declined significantly in Europe. Overall, console sales dropped by 21% from the previous year. PlayStation, buoyed somewhat by the PS5 Pro, experienced a 20% decline in sales compared to 2023. The Nintendo Switch saw a 15% drop, while the Xbox Series X/S saw a dramatic 48% decrease. Analysts suggest this decline is due to market saturation, with the original PS5 and Xbox Series consoles having been released in 2020, and the Nintendo Switch in 2017. Interestingly, on Amazon's US site, the Meta Quest 3S outsold all major gaming consoles in 2024, hinting at a broader stagnation in console sales across various regions.

Video Game Sales Shift and Growth Stagnates

Overall, the European gaming market saw only a modest increase in 2024, with 188.1 million PC and console games sold, marking a mere 1% rise from the previous year. While any growth is positive, it likely fell short of many game publishers' expectations. The data also reveals a significant shift in purchasing behavior, with digital game sales increasing to 131.6 million, a 15% rise over 2023, while physical game sales fell to 56.5 million, a 22% drop compared to the previous year.

Looking ahead, 2025 is anticipated to be a more robust year for gaming in Europe and globally, especially with the upcoming release of the Nintendo Switch 2, which is expected to boost sales significantly. It's important to note, however, that the reported console sales figures exclude data from key markets such as the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Austria. Including these regions could potentially alter the perceived severity of the 2024 sales decline.
