By JacobMay 03,2025

It’s fair to say that Verdansk is injecting fresh excitement into Call of Duty: Warzone, and the timing couldn't be more perfect. The internet had prematurely declared Activision's now five-year-old battle royale "cooked" before the nostalgia-infused Verdansk made a dramatic comeback. Now, the online community is buzzing, proclaiming Warzone "back." Yes, Activision did nuke Verdansk, but that dramatic event seems to have only added to its allure. Lapsed players, reminiscing about Warzone as their go-to lockdown game, are flocking back to the map that started it all. Meanwhile, loyal players who have stuck with the game through every twist and turn over the past five years are unanimously agreeing that Warzone is more enjoyable now than it has been since its explosive debut in 2020.

This return to the fundamental gameplay experience was a calculated move by developers Raven and Beenox. Pete Actipis, the game director at Raven, and Etienne Pouliot, the creative director at Beenox, spearheaded the multi-studio effort to rejuvenate Warzone. In an extensive interview with IGN, the duo delved into their approach, shared insights on the triumph of Verdansk’s Casual mode, and disclosed whether they contemplated restricting operator skins to mil-sim outfits for an authentic 2020 vibe. They also tackled the burning question on everyone's mind: Is Verdansk here to stay?

Read on to discover more about their strategies and future plans for Call of Duty: Warzone.
