11 bit studios has exciting news for fans of the Frostpunk series: a remake titled Frostpunk 1886 is set to launch in 2027. This announcement comes just over six months after the release of Frostpunk 2, and nearly a decade after the original Frostpunk debuted in 2018.

Frostpunk 1886 will be developed using Unreal Engine 5, a significant shift from the studio's proprietary Liquid Engine, which powered both the original Frostpunk and This War of Mine. This new engine will allow 11 bit studios to enhance the game's visuals and introduce new features that were not possible with the old technology.

Set in an alternate late 19th-century world, Frostpunk is renowned for its city-building survival gameplay during a global volcanic winter. Players must manage resources, make critical survival decisions, and explore beyond their city's limits for survivors and essential supplies.

IGN's review of the original Frostpunk awarded it a 9/10, praising its unique blend of thematic ideas and engaging strategy elements, though it noted some occasional unintuitive gameplay. Frostpunk 2, on the other hand, received an 8/10, with IGN appreciating the game's reimagined mechanics and increased social and political complexity, albeit with a less intimate feel than its predecessor.

While 11 bit studios continues to support Frostpunk 2 with planned DLCs, free major content updates, and a console launch, Frostpunk 1886 is poised to offer a refreshed take on the series. Named to commemorate the Great Storm that struck New London, this remake isn't just a graphical update but promises new content, mechanics, laws, and a novel "Purpose path" that will provide a fresh experience even for veteran players.

The use of Unreal Engine 5 in Frostpunk 1886 also paves the way for long-awaited mod support and the potential for future DLCs, transforming the game into a living, expandable platform. 11 bit studios envisions a future where Frostpunk 2 and Frostpunk 1886 coexist, each evolving and enhancing the survival experience in the unrelenting cold.
