FromSoftware has recently provided additional details about their newly announced exclusive for the Nintendo Switch 2, The Duskbloods. This collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game's style but also the design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a unique twist that aligns with Nintendo's charm.
During the Switch 2 Direct, a trailer concluded with a captivating shot of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs. This character, as it turns out, will serve as the hub companion in The Duskbloods. Director Hidetaka Miyazaki, in an interview with Nintendo, described this character's role, saying, "That character shares a similar role with the fire keepers from the Dark Souls series. They remain in the hub area, providing the player with advice and guidance."
Miyazaki elaborated on the design choice, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership." When pressed on what he meant by "Nintendo-esque," he added with a laugh, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman."
FromSoftware's shrine keepers have always been pivotal in guiding players through their challenging worlds. Iconic figures such as Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have been central to players' journeys, often empowering them to progress. In the context of The Duskbloods, a PvPvE game, the role of the winged rat hub companion remains intriguing. Miyazaki hinted at the game's innovation, saying, "The team at FromSoft has tried its hands at introducing a lot of new and interesting ideas," suggesting that players should brace for surprises when The Duskbloods launches on the Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
