Players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered on PC faced unexpected challenges following a surprise update released today, though Bethesda has confirmed a fix is in progress.
Early risers discovered that Virtuos' highly anticipated remaster had undergone an unannounced update. Without any accompanying patch notes or explanation of what the update aimed to resolve, most gamers continued their sessions as usual. However, others swiftly encountered significant issues caused by the very first Oblivion Remastered update.
"Why would @virtuosgames release an update for Oblivion Remastered that disables all upscaling just before the game’s debut weekend?" questioned one Twitter user. "No DLSS, no FSR—it’s a performance disaster!"
Reddit users echoed similar frustrations, highlighting that the update rendered upscaling options unavailable, leaving players with diminished visuals and lower frame rates despite high-end hardware.
While some players didn’t notice considerable changes, others reported frustratingly low framerates and an inability to alter upscaling settings. This has created significant visual problems just ahead of Oblivion Remastered’s highly anticipated launch weekend.
Bethesda attempted to address these concerns via an official statement on its support page. The company explained that the patch was intended to include minor backend adjustments unrelated to gameplay. Unfortunately, users purchasing Oblivion Remastered through the Microsoft Store appear to be the primary group affected, particularly regarding their upscaling and anti-aliasing settings.
“Settings altered before the Microsoft Store update remain active and functional,” Bethesda clarified. “However, users are currently unable to modify these settings due to a glitch in the UI. Our team is actively investigating and will provide further updates as soon as possible.”
In the interim, it appears console players on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S are unaffected and can continue playing without issue.
