On January 19th, a temporary US shutdown of TikTok unexpectedly impacted Marvel Snap, the popular card game published by Nuverse (a ByteDance subsidiary). This disruption, lasting approximately 24 hours, resulted in temporary game inaccessibility and a complete halt to in-app purchases. While the game is now back online, full functionality is still being restored.
This incident, according to an official Platform X statement, stems from the inherent political risks associated with TikTok's precarious position in the US market. The company was granted only a 90-day extension to finalize a deal selling 50% of its US operations to a local entity. Failure to secure this agreement could lead to further disruptions for TikTok and its related projects, including Marvel Snap.
The developers are exploring a publisher change and internalizing some services to mitigate future risks. Second Dinner Studios, Marvel Snap's developer, has promised further updates.
While many players experienced authorization problems, Steam users retained access. The unexpected nature of the shutdown, particularly the lack of prior warning, caused considerable frustration, especially for those who made in-game purchases immediately before the blockage. Second Dinner expressed surprise and assured players, via Platform X, that "Marvel Snap is here to stay" and that they are diligently working to resolve the remaining issues.
