Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Rank-Inclusive Character Bans
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning numerous innocent players. The mass ban, intended to target cheaters, incorrectly flagged a significant number of non-Windows users.
The affected players primarily utilized compatibility layers such as those found on macOS, Linux systems, and the Steam Deck. According to a January 3rd announcement on the official Discord server, the erroneous bans stemmed from these compatibility layers being misidentified as cheating software. NetEase has since rectified the situation, lifting the bans and offering sincere apologies for the inconvenience. They encouraged players to report genuine cheating incidents and utilize the in-game or Discord support channels for appeal processes. The Steam Deck's Proton compatibility layer is noted for its tendency to trigger anti-cheat systems.
Separately, a significant player concern revolves around the game's character ban mechanic. Currently, this feature—allowing competitive teams to remove specific characters from selection—is only available at Diamond rank and above. This limitation has sparked frustration among lower-ranked players, as highlighted on the game's subreddit. Players argue that extending character bans to all ranks would enhance gameplay balance, provide learning opportunities for newer players, and foster more diverse team compositions beyond simple DPS-focused strategies.
While NetEase hasn't yet publicly addressed this feedback, the demand for a rank-inclusive character ban system reflects a desire for improved fairness and strategic depth across all skill levels within Marvel Rivals.
