Honor of Kings is making big esports announcements for 2025! Following its global launch, the game is bringing an invitational tournament to the Philippines for the first time, running from February 21st to March 1st. Even bigger news is the global adoption of a new ban & pick format for Season Three's invitational and all future tournaments.
What exactly is ban & pick? It's simpler than you might think. Once a hero is used by a team in a match, that hero is unavailable to that team for the rest of the tournament. A player can't use the same hero twice, but opponents are free to use it.
This is a significant change. Many MOBA players specialize in a small roster of mastered heroes. Think of Tyler1 and his Draven in League of Legends – a perfect example of player-hero synergy. Ban & pick adds a layer of strategic depth, forcing teams to adapt and coordinate their hero choices.
Ban & pick is already popular in MOBAs like League of Legends and games like Rainbow Six Siege, often with pre-match team bans. Honor of Kings' implementation, however, puts the decision directly in the hands of individual players, emphasizing team coordination and creating exciting strategic dilemmas. Will players choose a hero best suited to the situation, even if a teammate is more skilled with it? Or will they prioritize their main hero, risking early-game losses for potential later advantages? This new format promises to make Honor of Kings esports even more captivating for viewers.
