"Back to the Future Screenwriter Confirms No Prequel, Spinoff, or Sequel Ever"

By SkylarMay 15,2025

Speculation about a revival of the iconic "Back to the Future" franchise has been swirling, particularly after the creators of the "Cobra Kai" TV series hinted at a potential "Back to the Future" television adaptation. However, Bob Gale, the co-writer of the original trilogy directed by Robert Zemeckis, has firmly shut down these rumors. In an interview with People, Gale expressed frustration over the persistent questions about the franchise's future, stating, "I don't know why they keep talking about that! I mean, do they think that if they say it enough times, we're going to actually do it?"

Gale reiterated his stance on any potential "Back to the Future 4," prequel, or spinoff, emphasizing, "Never. It's just fine the way it is. It's not perfect, but as Bob Zemeckis used to say, 'It's perfect enough.'" Despite the power of Hollywood to potentially override such decisions, Gale noted that executive producer Steven Spielberg would also need to approve any revival. He jokingly added that only extreme circumstances would make them reconsider, but affirmed Spielberg's respect for their decision to keep the franchise as is. "Steven, just like Steven won't allow another E.T., he totally respects the fact that we don't want any more Back to the Future. He gets it and always stood behind that. And thank you, Steven," Gale said.

Gale's stance is consistent with his previous remarks. Earlier in the year, he had a blunt message for fans hoping for more "Back to the Future" content: "People always say, 'When are you going to do Back to the Future 4?' And we say, 'F**k you.'" The original "Back to the Future" film, released in 1985, follows high school student Marty McFly, played by Michael J. Fox, who is accidentally sent back in time by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, portrayed by Christopher Lloyd. The film became one of the most iconic sci-fi movies ever made and led to two successful sequels.
