In a surprising move, Evil Dead: The Game, the asymmetric multiplayer title inspired by the iconic action horror series, has been pulled from digital storefronts by its publisher. Initially released in 2022 for PC, PlayStation, and Xbox, the game received a solid 8/10 from IGN, where it was praised for its thrilling gameplay reminiscent of the beloved horror/comedy films it draws from. Despite its positive reception, the game struggled to maintain a robust player base.
A Game of the Year Edition was released a year after the initial launch in an attempt to boost interest, but it did not significantly impact player numbers. The situation worsened when the planned Nintendo Switch version was canceled in September 2023, alongside a halt in content development.
Now, three years post-launch, Evil Dead: The Game is no longer available for purchase. However, Saber Interactive, the game's developer and publisher, has assured that the servers will continue to operate, allowing existing owners to keep playing.
In a statement on the game's Steam page, Saber Interactive elaborated on the decision:
We can confirm we've begun the process of removing the game from digital storefronts. Anyone who has purchased the game will still be able to play it as we plan to keep our servers online for everyone.
We want to extend a sincere thank you to our community, to those who have been part of the game from the very beginning, and those who have recently joined us. We appreciate all of your support.
The move has been met with disappointment from the community, as evidenced by the numerous negative reviews on the game’s Steam page. Many players feel that the game is now effectively "dead." Despite this, the overall Steam user review rating remains 'mixed.' One dedicated player, with over 380 hours of gameplay, left a poignant positive review, stating, “The end is nigh. It was fun while it lasted, lads. I mean that.”
Saber Interactive, known for last year's successful Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, continues to work on several licensed movie games. Upcoming projects include John Carpenter's Toxic Commando, Jurassic Park Survival, an untitled Avatar: The Last Airbender game, Turok: Origins, and Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 3.
