Disneyland Sets Sites for Coco, Avatar Lands; Monsters Attraction Closes

By HannahNov 30,2025

Disney has announced that the upcoming Coco-themed attraction at Disneyland will be built in currently backstage areas near Paradise Gardens Park and Pixar Pier in Disney California Adventure, while a new Avatar-inspired land will occupy part of the existing Hollywood Backlot space. This transformation means the beloved Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! ride will permanently close in early 2026 to accommodate the Avatar expansion.

New concept art and details were shared on the Disney Parks Blog, confirming that construction for the Coco attraction will commence backstage this fall. First announced at D23 2024, this will mark the debut attraction based on the popular Pixar film.

The ride will take creative cues from classic attractions like Haunted Mansion and Pirates of the Caribbean. Disney's team plans to showcase their skeletal characters through cutting-edge Audio-Animatronic technology, promising "figures will appear in ways you have to see to believe."

Development for the Avatar area remains in early stages, with construction timelines and further details to be revealed later. Inspired by Avatar: The Way of Water and future franchise installments, this new land will offer a fresh interpretation of Pandora following the success of Disney World's Animal Kingdom version that opened in 2017.

While saying goodbye to Monsters, Inc. Mike & Sulley to the Rescue! may disappoint some fans, a new Monsters, Inc. land featuring Disney's first suspended roller coaster through the iconic door warehouse is coming to Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World.

Alongside these attraction updates, Disney confirmed plans for an eastside expansion at Disneyland Resort. A new parking structure and transportation hub will replace part of the current Manchester cast member parking lot, adding approximately 6,000 parking spaces while improving traffic flow.

The complex will include shuttle zones, rideshare areas, security checkpoints, and direct access from Disney Way. A pedestrian bridge spanning Harbor Boulevard will lead to an enhanced entrance experience, maintaining connectivity to the boulevard.
