Apple Abandons 30% Fee on External Links

By IsabellaMay 16,2025

In the latest development of the Epic vs Apple saga, a significant ruling has emerged that may force Apple to eliminate its controversial 30% commission on transactions made through alternative payment methods outside the App Store. This ruling marks a pivotal moment in the long-standing legal battle initiated by Epic Games, the creators of the popular battle royale game Fortnite, when they began allowing in-app purchases directly from their platform at a discounted rate.

Previously, Apple had to comply with similar regulations in the European Union, but the rulings in the United States had been more favorable to them. However, the recent decision now prohibits Apple from imposing fees on purchases made outside of apps, restricting how developers can format and place links to external sites, limiting the use of 'calls to action' like banners that highlight potential savings, excluding certain apps or developers, and using 'scare screens' to influence consumer choices. Instead, Apple must adopt 'neutral messaging' when informing users that they are navigating to a third-party website.

While Epic Games may have faced setbacks in individual battles, this ruling signifies a major victory in their ongoing war against Apple's policies. Despite Apple's intention to appeal the decision, the likelihood of overturning the judges' rulings seems slim.

With the Epic Games Store now expanding on Android and iOS in the EU, and on Android in the US, the significance of the iOS App Store may diminish in the near future. This shift could herald a new era of more open and competitive digital marketplaces for mobile gaming and applications.
