Emmy Snubs Spark Debate as Andor Showrunner Voices Disappointment

Andor Creator Tony Gilroy Speaks Out on Emmy Nominations

The Emmy nominations announcement has sparked intense debate among fans and creators alike. Andor showrunner Tony Gilroy recently expressed disappointment over several deserving performances from his Star Wars series being overlooked.

Unrecognized Brilliance

"Several remarkable performances deserved recognition," Gilroy told Deadline, specifically mentioning leads Diego Luna and Genevieve O'Reilly. "There were at least a dozen standout performances this season."

For Gilroy, what makes Luna's and O'Reilly's work extraordinary isn't just individual scenes, but the profound character arcs they've developed across two seasons: "These aren't flashy one-off performances - they're masterful, sustained character studies developed over 24 episodes. Their work will stand the test of time and be studied for years to come."

Andor's Emmy Presence

Despite the snubs, Andor earned an impressive 14 Emmy nominations - the third highest tally for any Star Wars series. The Mandalorian seasons 1 (15 noms) and 2 (24 noms) remain the franchise leaders.

Luna stars as rebel spy Cassian Andor, while O'Reilly reprises her role as Rebel Alliance leader Mon Mothma - a character she first played in 2005's Revenge of the Sith (though her scenes were cut). She later returned in Rogue One (2016), voiced the character in Star Wars Rebels (2017), and most recently appeared in Ahsoka (2023).

After premiering in September 2022, Andor concluded its acclaimed run with its second season in April 2025 - marking nearly three years between seasons.

Watch the Emmy-nominated series now on Disney+, and explore why critics are calling it some of the best storytelling in the Star Wars universe.
