Xbox has officially paused development on Contraband, the highly anticipated action-adventure title from Avalanche Studios (known for the Just Cause series), citing a need to "reevaluate the project's direction." The news follows a report by Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier, who revealed that the game—first unveiled at E3 2021—has been canceled after four years of silence and no new updates.
Avalanche Studios Group confirmed the status change in a statement on its official website:
"In recent years, Avalanche Studios Group and Xbox Game Studios Publishing have partnered on Contraband. Active development is currently on hold as we assess the project's next steps. We appreciate the community’s enthusiasm since the initial reveal and will share more details as soon as possible."
Contraband was set in the fictional 1970s coastal city of Bayan—a hotbed for smuggling, crime, and international intrigue—and was pitched as a stylish, open-world adventure blending high-octane chaos with a gritty, nostalgic tone. Despite generating early excitement, the project never released gameplay footage or progress updates, fueling speculation over its fate.
Adding context to the announcement, reports from 2022 revealed internal turmoil at Avalanche Studios, including disputes over a controversial executive hire, communication breakdowns, and growing tensions that led to unionization efforts. The studio’s push for a collective bargaining agreement highlighted deeper organizational issues, which may have contributed to delays and instability in the project's development.
This pause comes amid broader restructuring at Xbox and Microsoft gaming. In October 2023, Microsoft announced a major layoff of 9,100 employees across the company, including hundreds within Xbox Game Studios. The cuts have led to the cancellation or indefinite delay of several high-profile projects, including:
- Everwild (from Playground Games, rumored to be a spiritual successor to Forza Horizon)
- Perfect Dark (a reboot of the classic Nintendo FPS, reportedly in development for Xbox Series X|S)
- Project C, a rumored Halo spinoff
The cancellation of Contraband signals a significant shift in Xbox’s development strategy—one marked by consolidation, risk aversion, and a focus on core franchises over ambitious new IPs.
While Avalanche and Xbox have not confirmed the game’s permanent cancellation, the absence of progress and the official pause suggest that Contraband may not move forward under its current form. Fans will have to wait for further word from either studio on whether the project will be revived—or if this marks the end of the road for one of Xbox’s most talked-about, yet longest-silent, titles.
For now, the dream of a Just Cause-style smasher set in a sun-drenched, crime-fueled 1970s port city remains, unresolved.
