Tarneeb, known as "rule" in the Arab Gulf states, is a popular card game in Arab countries, especially in the Levant, where it is enjoyed as a social and competitive pastime. The primary objective of Tarneeb is to win consecutive rounds or "groups." The game is typically played by four players, divided into two teams of two, with partners sitting opposite each other at the table.
A standard 52-card deck is used, without Jokers. The game begins with the dealer distributing the cards to the right, starting from the player on their immediate right. The bidding process, which determines the trump suit (Tarneeb), starts with the player to the left of the dealer. Bidding ranges from 7 to 13, known as "Cabot" or "livers," and proceeds clockwise. The highest bidder selects the trump suit for that round.
During gameplay, if a team fails to meet their bid, they are penalized. For instance, if a team bids for 10 tricks but only wins 9, they lose the equivalent number of points they bid for (10 points), while the opposing team gains points for the tricks they won, say 4 points in this example. If the opposing team wins 5 tricks, any overbidding is exposed, and the penalties are applied accordingly.
The game concludes when one team reaches a predetermined score, either 61 or 31 points, depending on the agreement made before the start of the game.
The card hierarchy in Tarneeb is as follows, from highest to lowest:
- A (Ace, known as "Cut")
- K (King, known as "Sheikh")
- Q (Queen, known as "girl")
- J (Jack, known as "born")
- 10 down to 2 in descending order
