The game unfolds on an 8x8 square board (ranks numbered 1–8, files labeled a–h), alternating light and dark squares. Each player sets up their side with a white corner square at their right-hand end.

Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 pawns, 2 knights, 2 bishops, 2 rooks, 1 queen, and 1 king. White always moves first; thereafter, players alternate turns moving one piece per turn.

Over 2000 chess variants exist—including Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess—offering diverse strategic experiences.
