A fresh look at retro gaming on the Nintendo Switch, focusing on Game Boy Advance and Nintendo DS titles available on the eShop. Surprisingly, fewer GBA and DS ports exist on the Switch compared to other consoles. This list highlights ten favorites – four GBA and six DS games – showcasing titles that stand out from the Nintendo Switch Online app's offerings.
Game Boy Advance
Steel Empire (2004) – Over Horizon X Steel Empire ($14.99)
Kicking things off with a solid shoot 'em up, Steel Empire. While the Genesis/Mega Drive version holds a slight edge, this GBA iteration offers a compelling alternative. A worthwhile play for comparison, and a more streamlined experience. Steel Empire is enjoyable regardless of version, appealing even to those who typically avoid shooters.
Mega Man Zero – Mega Man Zero/ZX Legacy Collection ($29.99)
As the Mega Man X series faltered on home consoles, the Mega Man Zero series emerged on the GBA. This side-scrolling action game, though initially somewhat rough around the edges, marks the beginning of an excellent franchise. The series refines its mechanics over time, but Mega Man Zero provides the perfect starting point.
Mega Man Battle Network – Mega Man Battle Network Legacy Collection ($59.99)
A Mega Man double-feature is justified here, as Mega Man Zero and Mega Man Battle Network offer distinct gameplay experiences. Battle Network is an RPG with a unique battle system blending action and strategy. Its clever concept of a virtual world within electronic devices is fully realized. While later entries show diminishing returns, the first game provides ample enjoyment.
Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow – Castlevania Advance Collection ($19.99)
The Castlevania Advance Collection contains several worthwhile titles, but Aria of Sorrow stands out. For many, it surpasses even the acclaimed Symphony of the Night. Its soul-collecting system encourages exploration, and the engaging gameplay makes grinding enjoyable. An unusual setting and hidden secrets add to its appeal, making it a top-tier GBA title.
Nintendo DS
Shantae: Risky’s Revenge – Director’s Cut ($9.99)
Originally a cult classic with limited distribution, Shantae: Risky’s Revenge gained wider recognition through its DSiWare release. This game launched Shantae into broader popularity, leading to continued success across console generations. Its origins are somewhat unique, stemming from an unreleased GBA title.
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney – Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney Trilogy ($29.99)
Arguably a GBA title (its origin console), Ace Attorney blends investigations and courtroom drama with humorous storytelling. The first game sets a high standard, though later installments are also well-regarded. A strong entry point for the series.
Ghost Trick: Phantom Detective ($29.99)
From the creator of Ace Attorney, Ghost Trick features a unique gameplay mechanic. Players control a ghost, using their abilities to save others while uncovering the mystery of their own death. A captivating and highly recommended experience.
The World Ends With You: Final Remix ($49.99)
A top-tier Nintendo DS title, best experienced on its original hardware. The Switch version provides a viable alternative for those without access to a DS, and it remains a highly recommended game.
Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow – Castlevania Dominus Collection ($24.99)
The Castlevania Dominus Collection includes all three Nintendo DS Castlevania games. While all are excellent, Dawn of Sorrow benefits from improved button controls over its original touch controls. Playing all three is strongly recommended.
Etrian Odyssey III HD – Etrian Odyssey Origins Collection ($79.99)
A franchise that thrives on the DS/3DS ecosystem, Etrian Odyssey III is a substantial RPG, though it has its complexities. A worthwhile experience for RPG fans.
