"Super Mario World: Unannounced Sequel Title Released and Retracted by NBCUniversal"

By JackMay 20,2025

It appears that we may have caught an early glimpse of the title for the sequel to *The Super Mario Bros. Movie* thanks to a premature announcement in an NBCUniversal press release. This document, which was intended to outline the company's Upfront Showcase offerings, inadvertently revealed "Super Mario World" as one of the upcoming films set to be released on Peacock, the streaming service operated by Universal Pictures and Illumination.

The mention of "Super Mario World" quickly spread across the internet, prompting NBCUniversal to swiftly revise the press release and remove any references to Mario. This swift action was captured and shared by users on social media, such as the tweet from @Wario64:

The original press release listed "Super Mario World, Shrek, and Minions" together. It's known that the Shrek and Minions entries refer to *Shrek 5* and *Minions 3*, respectively. This suggests that "Super Mario World" might be an umbrella term rather than the definitive title for the Mario sequel. Just as *Shrek 5* isn't simply titled *Shrek*, and *Minions 3* isn't just *Minions*, the final title for the Mario movie might still be undisclosed.

Despite this, "Super Mario World" stands out as a more specific title compared to a generic "Super Mario" or "Super Mario Bros." This specificity lends credibility to the possibility that "Super Mario World" could indeed be the title of the next Mario movie, making it an intriguing prospect for fans.
