Stephen King's Cujo Will Be Reimagined In New Netflix Adaptation

By SkylarApr 03,2025

In the latest wave of Stephen King adaptations—or what some might call a trend of remakes—Netflix is gearing up to unleash a new film version of the iconic novel "Cujo." According to Deadline, the streaming giant has enlisted the expertise of Roy Lee, the founder of Vertigo Entertainment, to produce this chilling project. However, the film is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members attached yet.

Originally published in 1981, Stephen King's "Cujo" was swiftly adapted into a cult classic horror film in 1983, helmed by Lewis Teague and penned by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner. The story centers on a determined mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who finds herself trapped in a car with her young son. Their vehicle's engine has failed, and they must fend off the relentless attacks of Cujo, a once-friendly dog now turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat. As they battle both the ferocious canine and the looming threat of heatstroke, their fight for survival becomes a gripping tale of maternal instinct and human endurance.

Oz Perkins' adaptation of King’s short story "The Monkey" hit theaters in February, and fans can look forward to more thrilling releases this year, including a new take on "The Running Man" starring Glen Powell and JT Mollner's interpretation of "The Long Walk," also produced by Roy Lee and Vertigo Entertainment. Additionally, the "IT" prequel series "Welcome to Derry" is set to premiere on HBO, and a new eight-episode series based on "Carrie," directed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan, will be available on Prime Video.

Stephen King enthusiasts have been relishing a feast of adaptations, and with "Cujo" joining the lineup, the culinary delights just keep coming.
