Star Wars Outlaws Underperforms, Outsold by Jedi: Survivor

Ubisoft's Star Wars Outlaws, the first open-world Star Wars game, is significantly underperforming, falling short of sales projections and even being outsold by 2023's Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, according to recent reports. This news follows a sharp drop in Ubisoft's stock price after the August 2024 launch.

While initial reviews were positive, player feedback highlighted issues with the game's combat and stealth mechanics. Subsequent updates addressed these concerns, but failed to significantly boost sales. Ubisoft acknowledged the game's underperformance in September.

Further compounding the issue, industry reports indicate that Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, a critically acclaimed single-player title, has surpassed Outlaws in sales figures, though specific numbers remain undisclosed. In Europe, Outlaws only managed a 47th place ranking in 2024's best-selling games.

Several factors likely contribute to Jedi: Survivor's success. It's a sequel to a popular title, received overwhelmingly positive reviews upon its April 2023 release, and benefited from a later-year update expanding its platform availability. Conversely, Outlaws has struggled to gain traction despite ongoing updates and DLC releases.

Post-launch content for Outlaws includes "Wild Card," featuring Lando Calrissian, and the upcoming "A Pirate's Fortune," set for Spring 2025 and featuring Hondo Ohnaka. Whether this DLC will revitalize sales remains to be seen. The game's underperformance raises questions about the future of open-world Star Wars titles and Ubisoft's overall strategy.
