Spider-Man 2 on PC was initially poised to be surprisingly performant based on its system requirements. However, the Nixxes-developed port has launched to a 'mixed' rating on Steam, with numerous players reporting technical difficulties. As of now, only 55% of the game's Steam reviews are positive, highlighting widespread dissatisfaction among the player base.
Players with high-end hardware, including those with an RTX 4090 and the latest Nvidia drivers (5.66.36), have encountered frequent crashes. One such user said, "Despite having a high-end GPU and running the latest Nvidia drivers, the game frequently crashes." Another player found the game "completely unplayable on PC," experiencing crashes every five minutes and has already requested a refund.
A reviewer warned, "Hold off on buying until they get a couple of stabilization patches out because holy hell. To say this is 'rough' is an understatement." They described issues like lighting not loading in some cutscenes, scenes running at seconds-per-frame, audio desynchronization, freezing, stuttering, and other performance problems. Frustrated, the reviewer decided to seek a refund, citing better uses for the $70 spent on the game.
The prevalent issue seems to stem from the game's graphics controller crashing frequently, even on higher-end PCs. According to one error message, "A problem has occurred with your display driver. This can be caused by out-of-date drivers, using game settings higher than your GPU can handle, an overheating GPU, or an error with the game. Please try updating your graphics drivers, or lowering your in-game settings."
Additional user complaints include malfunctioning features such as DLSS and ray tracing, long loading times, missing textures, and audio issues. Some players alleged that the game stutters after several hours of gameplay, eventually leading to a hard crash. There's speculation among players that a memory leak might be the culprit behind these issues.
Nixxes has acknowledged the reported crashes on the Steam forums, advising affected users to consult the troubleshooting guides on the Nixxes Support website and to contact them if issues persist, including logs and crash dumps for quicker resolution.
Moreover, Nixxes has identified a specific bug during the photo-op missions in Spider-Man 2 that can occur at very low frame rates (below 20 FPS). They suggest lowering graphics settings or resolution as a workaround to progress past this point.
