While the prior generation Sony XM4 was already exceptional, the XM5 introduces key enhancements in noise cancellation and comfort. It's equipped with a second processor and twice the number of microphones dedicated to eliminating ambient noise. The redesigned earcups fit more snugly, improving passive noise isolation and making the XM5's noise cancellation superior to the XM4 and most other headphones in its price range.

The Sony WH-1000XM5 also features a sleeker design with an updated headband adjustment mechanism. The wider band ensures better weight distribution, and the earcup padding, now made from a softer, more luxurious synthetic leather, enhances comfort for extended wear. However, a minor downside is that the XM5 can't be folded inward, only swiveled, making it less compact.
