Virtua Fighter's Return: A Glimpse into the Future
Sega has unveiled new in-engine footage of the upcoming Virtua Fighter game, marking the franchise's highly anticipated return after nearly two decades of relative dormancy. This new installment, developed by Sega's own Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio, promises a fresh take on the classic fighting game.
The recently released footage, first shown at NVIDIA's 2025 CES keynote, isn't actual gameplay, but rather a meticulously choreographed cinematic showcasing the game's impressive visuals. While undeniably staged, the video offers a compelling preview of the game's aesthetic, suggesting a shift towards a more realistic art style, blending elements reminiscent of both Tekken 8 and Street Fighter 6. The iconic character Akira is featured, sporting new outfits that depart from his traditional look.
This marks a significant departure from the franchise's earlier, more stylized polygonal aesthetic. The polished visuals are a testament to the development team's expertise, particularly given Ryu Ga Gotoku Studio's proven track record with the Yakuza series and their previous work on the Virtua Fighter 5 remaster. They are also responsible for Sega's ambitious Project Century.
While details remain scarce, project director Riichirou Yamada's earlier statements hint at a bold new direction for the franchise. The commitment to this revitalization is clear, as evidenced by Sega President and COO Shuji Utsumi's enthusiastic declaration during the VF Direct 2024 livestream: "Virtua Fighter is finally back!" The upcoming Steam release of Virtua Fighter 5 Ultimate Showdown in January 2025 further fuels anticipation for this new chapter in the Virtua Fighter saga. The return of this legendary franchise promises to further solidify the 2020s as a golden age for fighting games.
