Ryan Reynolds Proposes R-Rated Star Wars to Disney

By SadieApr 07,2026

Ryan Reynolds revealed he presented an R-rated Star Wars concept to Disney, though its production status remains uncertain.

The Deadpool star discussed his non-Marvel ventures during an appearance on The Box Office Podcast. While remaining coy about Disney's response or whether the project would be cinematic or episodic, he described his creative vision for the mature-rated adaptation.

"I suggested to Disney, 'Let's develop an R-rated Star Wars spinoff,'" Reynolds explained. "It wouldn't necessarily focus on primary characters - this universe offers countless possibilities. An R-rating isn't about vulgarity; it's an emotional conduit. Studios often hesitate to take such creative risks, which puzzles me."

Reynolds boasts an impressive R-rated film pedigree. Three of his projects rank among the top five highest-grossing R-rated films ever: the Deadpool franchise and Deadpool & Wolverine. The latter, co-starring Hugh Jackman, currently holds the R-rated box office record with $1.3 billion (per Box Office Mojo).

"I wouldn't suit an on-screen role in this concept - that wouldn't work well,"

While success in Star Wars' family-friendly universe isn't guaranteed, Reynolds remains intrigued by the creative challenge. However, he envisions a behind-the-scenes role rather than appearing on camera.

"I'd prefer producing and writing contributions," he clarified. "Star Wars thrives on scarcity and surprise elements. With Disney+'s constant content stream, scarcity may be difficult, but audience expectations can still be surpassed."

Reynolds continues his Marvel involvement despite reservations about Deadpool joining the Avengers. Reports indicate he's advocated for a Deadpool/X-Men crossover behind the scenes.

The Star Wars project likely remains distant. For updates on Disney's galactic expansion, explore details about Star Wars: Starfighter - a film by Reynolds' frequent collaborator Shawn Levy. While information remains scarce, Barbie star Ryan Gosling is confirmed to lead the project.
