Rian Johnson Skipped Outline for Star Wars Trilogy

By LillianJan 07,2026

Remember when Rian Johnson was set to helm an entire new Star Wars trilogy? The Glass Onion director recently shed light on these unrealized projects, revealing they remained "entirely conceptual" — so much so that he never progressed to creating an "outline, treatment, or any concrete plans."

"Nothing substantial ever materialized," Johnson told Rolling Stone. "We enjoyed collaborating, and they proposed continuing. I agreed enthusiastically. Kathy Kennedy and I would casually brainstorm concepts."

"Ultimately, Knives Out became my focus. After launching that franchise, I became fully immersed in crafting murder mysteries. Should Star Wars opportunities arise later, I'd be delighted — whether for this project or others. Currently, I'm content focusing on original work."

While originally developing a Star Wars trilogy with Kennedy, Johnson pivoted when Knives Out emerged — his Agatha Christie-inspired mystery that redirected his creative path.

Years ago, Johnson expressed interest in returning to Star Wars, though he acknowledged, "Nobody's world would end if it didn’t happen."

"Personally, I'd feel disappointed," he shared with Variety in 2022. "I adore this universe, its community, and fans’ passionate engagement. Creating stories that resonate so deeply with audiences is uniquely rewarding."

During that interview, Johnson also reflected on The Last Jedi's divisive reception, noting his childhood debates about Star Wars — especially his initial dislike of the Prequels — helped him navigate criticism.

Since directing 2017's The Last Jedi, Johnson hasn’t revisited that galaxy. With Wake Up Dead Man (the next Knives Out film) arriving in December and Lucasfilm's Star Wars slate extending through 2027, fans might wait awhile for his potential return to lightsabers.
