Red Dead Redemption 2, GTA 5 Sales Remain Strong

Summary

  • Both GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 continue to sell incredibly well years after release.
  • Grand Theft Auto 5 was ranked as the third highest-selling title for the PS5 in both the US/Canada and Europe in December 2024.
  • Red Dead Redemption 2 was the highest-selling PS4 game in the United States and came in second in the EU during the same month.

Rockstar Games' titles, Grand Theft Auto 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2, continue to dominate sales charts years after their initial releases, showcasing the enduring appeal and high quality of these acclaimed open-world games. Grand Theft Auto 5, which launched in 2013, immerses players in the chaotic city of Los Santos as they navigate the lives of three aspiring criminals. Its success has been monumental, not just at launch but through multiple platform re-releases and the addition of a popular online multiplayer mode, cementing its status as one of the best-selling pieces of entertainment media ever. On the other hand, Red Dead Redemption 2, released in 2018, lets players explore the vast, untamed landscapes of the Old West through the eyes of outlaw Arthur Morgan, and has similarly garnered critical acclaim and commercial success.

Despite being nearly 12 years old for GTA 5 and almost seven years for Red Dead Redemption 2, both titles continue to thrive. According to PlayStation's December 2024 download chart, GTA 5 secured the third spot for PS5 sales in both the US/Canada and Europe, and also ranked fifth for PS4 in these regions. Red Dead Redemption 2 led the PS4 sales in the United States and was second in the EU, only surpassed by EA Sports FC 25.

GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 Are Still Topping PlayStation Sales Charts

The European 2024 GSD figures, as reported by VGC, highlight GTA 5 as the fourth highest-selling title of the past year, an improvement from its fifth place in 2023. Red Dead Redemption 2 also climbed the ranks, securing seventh place, up from eighth in the previous year. Take-Two, Rockstar's parent company, recently announced that GTA 5 has surpassed 205 million sales, while Red Dead Redemption 2 has sold over 67 million copies.

The sustained success of these titles underscores the lasting appeal of Rockstar's games. Fans eagerly anticipate the future of these franchises; Grand Theft Auto 6 is set to launch later this year, and there are rumors that Red Dead Redemption 2 might be ported to the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 console.
