PS5 Disc Drive Back in Stock (But Maybe Not For Long)
The PlayStation 5 disc drive is currently available at select US retailers, including PlayStation Direct and Amazon, as of mid-January 2025. However, given recent trends, this limited stock is unlikely to last.
The scarcity stems partly from the release of the PS5 Digital Edition in 2020, the first Sony console without a built-in disc drive, and further compounded by the 2024 launch of the disc-drive-less PS5 Pro. Both the PS5 Pro and the Slim models offer modularity, allowing users to purchase and install a disc drive separately. This has led to significant demand, particularly in the US, where the official Sony accessory has been consistently low in stock for months.
While some retailers have recently restocked, availability remains limited. As of January 15th, Amazon and PlayStation Direct offer the drive at its MSRP of $79.99. A third-party seller on Walmart was also found to have stock, but at a 50% markup ($122) and with only a few units remaining.
