Palworld, showcased at PlayStation's September 2024 State of Play event, has finally arrived on PlayStation consoles following its Xbox and PC releases. However, a significant exception exists: the PS5 launch is indefinitely delayed in Japan. This delay is strongly linked to ongoing legal action involving Nintendo.
Palworld's PlayStation 5 Debut and Japanese Delay
Palworld's PS5 Arrival Announced at State of Play
The PS5 version of Palworld launched globally as announced during the September 2024 PlayStation State of Play. Sony even highlighted the game, showcasing a character sporting Horizon Forbidden West-inspired gear.
Despite the global release, Japanese PlayStation players are currently unable to access the game. This is attributed to a patent infringement lawsuit filed against Palworld developer Pocketpair by Nintendo and Pokémon.
Uncertain Future for Palworld's Japanese PS5 Release
Following Sony's announcement, Palworld's Japanese Twitter (X) account issued a statement acknowledging the global release (excluding Japan) and apologizing for the delay. They confirmed that a Japanese release date remains undetermined, promising to deliver the game to all PS5 users as soon as possible.
While Pocketpair hasn't explicitly stated the reason for the delay, the ongoing legal battle in Japan is widely considered the primary cause. Nintendo's recent announcement of a Tokyo court case seeking injunctions and damages against Palworld further fuels this speculation. A successful injunction could force Pocketpair to cease Palworld operations entirely, potentially leading to the game's removal from all platforms.
