Overwatch 2's Extended 6v6 Playtest and Potential Permanent Return
Overwatch 2's 6v6 playtest, initially slated to conclude on January 6th, has been extended due to overwhelming player enthusiasm. Game Director Aaron Keller confirmed the mode's continued availability until mid-season, after which it will transition to an open queue format. This positive reception fuels speculation about its potential permanent integration into the game.
The 6v6 mode's initial appearance during November's Overwatch Classic event showcased its popularity. While its first run was brief, it quickly became a top-played mode. A subsequent role queue playtest, running from December 17th to January 6th, further solidified its appeal.
The recent extension, announced on Keller's Twitter, allows players more time to enjoy 12-player matches. Although the exact end date remains unannounced, the 6v6 experimental mode will soon move to the Arcade. The mid-season shift to open queue will require teams to field 1-3 heroes per class.
Arguments for a Permanent 6v6 Mode
The enduring success of the 6v6 mode is unsurprising, given its consistent ranking as a top player request since Overwatch 2's 2022 launch. The shift to 5v5 gameplay in the sequel significantly altered the game, impacting player experiences in various ways.
The extended playtest and overwhelmingly positive feedback significantly increase the likelihood of 6v6 becoming a permanent fixture in Overwatch 2. Many players anticipate its inclusion in the competitive playlist, a possibility once the playtesting phase concludes.
