Surprise! Nintendo has rolled out the first update for Animal Crossing: New Horizons in nearly three years.
This update, released on May 27, focuses on refining multiplayer functionality between Nintendo Switch 2 and the original Nintendo Switch, according to the patch notes. While not a major overhaul, it’s the first backend refresh for the serene simulation game since November 2022.
The exact nature of the "improved compatibility" remains unclear, but it likely ensures seamless cross-platform play, allowing Switch 2 users to visit friends’ islands on the original Switch without issues, and vice versa.
Animal Crossing: New Horizons will be playable on Switch 2, but unlike titles such as The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom or Kirby and the Forgotten Land, it won’t receive a dedicated Switch 2 Edition. The game should run smoothly for Switch 2 owners starting next week, unlike some titles known to encounter compatibility issues.
In Animal Crossing: New Horizons, players can retreat to a deserted island to craft their own paradise, exploring, building, and personalizing their community. The game remains a standout, earning a spot on our Top 25 Best Nintendo Switch Games in 2025 list. In our review, we gave it a 9, noting: “Animal Crossing: New Horizons delivers a refined, next-generation take on a beloved Nintendo classic, packed with delightful surprises.”
