Nintendo is dropping hints that a new 3D Mario game could be just around the corner, but fans will need to hold their excitement a bit longer to see it in action. In a recent chat with CNN, Nintendo of America's president, Doug Bowser, responded to the clamor for a new mainline Mario game. While he didn't confirm a direct sequel to Super Mario Odyssey, his comments suggest that fans won't have to wait too long for more details.
"Stay tuned," Bowser advised. "You know, we have a long, long catalog, and a long list of (intellectual property) that I’m sure will make its way to the platform."
Although Bowser's remarks don't guarantee an imminent announcement, they offer a glimmer of hope for those disappointed by the absence of a new 3D Mario game in the Nintendo Switch 2's launch lineup. When Nintendo unveiled its new hybrid console earlier this month, it showcased exciting titles like Donkey Kong Bananza and Mario Kart World, yet a classic 3D Mario platformer was conspicuously missing.
It's been nearly eight years since the last major Mario release, Super Mario Odyssey, which debuted shortly after the original Switch launched in October 2017. While games like Donkey Kong Bananza may temporarily fill the gap, they're not the Super Mario Odyssey 2 that many fans have been eagerly anticipating. Given Mario's pivotal role in Nintendo's extensive catalog, it would be surprising not to see a new 3D Mario game emerge sooner rather than later.
As of now, a new mainline Mario adventure remains under wraps. While we await further news, you can explore Nintendo's updated Switch 2 pre-order schedule here ahead of the console's launch on June 5, 2025.
