Nintendo Switch 2 Size Revealed

By AriaMay 03,2025

The Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer kicks off with a dramatic reveal: the new console is significantly larger than its predecessor. As the original Joy-Con controllers detach, the tablet section of the Switch transforms into a larger, more imposing form. This size increase indicates that Nintendo is shifting further from the compact handhelds of its past, aligning more closely with larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.

But just how much bigger is the Switch 2? While Nintendo hasn't released official dimensions, we can make educated guesses based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the chance to examine a Switch 2 mock-up by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the trailer's console design closely matches the mock-up, suggesting our measurements are likely close to the final product.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size

Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 boasts an 8-inch screen**. This measurement reflects the diagonal distance of the display itself, excluding the bezels. This aligns with rumors from early 2024, and we anticipate the screen to be approximately **177mm wide and 99mm tall**.

If these estimates hold true, the Switch 2's screen will be nearly 30% larger diagonally than the original's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. This substantial increase could make the Switch 2 a visually impressive device, provided the display quality is up to par.

How does the Switch 2's screen compare to other handhelds? The Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen is significantly smaller, making the new console's display 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area. The Switch OLED, with its 7-inch display, will be outclassed by the Switch 2, which is 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.

In the era of portable PCs, the Switch 2 will compete with the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck's 7-inch screen and the Steam Deck OLED's 7.4-inch display are larger than any previous Switch model. However, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still be larger, with an 8% increase in diagonal size and 11% more area than Valve's OLED display.

Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size

The larger screen naturally means a larger console. The original Switch was already a challenge to fit into pockets, and the Switch 2 will require even more space—think cargo pants or a bag.

Using measurements from the Genki mock-up at CES, we found the console to be just over **10.5 inches long and 4.5 inches tall** when including the Joy-Cons. After scaling images from the trailer to match our photos and measuring them, we estimate the Switch 2 to be approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**.

For context, the original Switch measures 239mm long and 102mm tall. Thus, the **Switch 2 is about 25% larger than its predecessor**. It's also around 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm) and roughly 12% smaller than the Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).

We couldn't obtain precise measurements of the mock-up's depth, but it appears the Switch 2 will maintain the original's half-inch thickness, meaning its overall footprint will be significantly larger while maintaining a similar depth.

Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size

The reveal trailer's transformation animation shows the Joy-Con controllers maintaining a similar width to the original but growing taller. Our analysis suggests the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons will be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall**—the same width as the original, but 13mm taller to match the new console's size. This means the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than the previous models.

Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size

By subtracting the Joy-Con dimensions from the overall console size, we estimate the **Switch 2 screen unit to be 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is about **31% larger than the original Switch** screen unit.

This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen with approximately 11mm bezels on the sides and 8mm bezels on the top and bottom. The side bezels are slimmer than those on the original Switch, while the top and bottom bezels remain similar.

Remember, these measurements are estimates based on our analysis and could differ from Nintendo's official dimensions. However, our experience with the Genki mock-up gives us confidence that we're close to the mark. We look forward to confirming these details when we get our hands on the Switch 2 later this year.
