Nintendo Denies AI Use in Mario Kart World Development Amid Billboard Speculation

Nintendo has refuted allegations claiming it utilized AI-generated images for billboards in Mario Kart World. Speculation arose following a Nintendo Treehouse livestream, which offered a sneak peek at the upcoming racing game. Observant fans noticed several in-game advertising boards featuring unusual imagery, such as a construction site, a bridge, and an oddly tall car, sparking curiosity.

Generative AI is a hot topic across creative fields, especially in video game development, where ethical concerns and job security issues are significant points of discussion. Labor unions have raised concerns over AI potentially replacing jobs, and performers have pushed for stronger protections.

Last year, Shigeru Miyamoto, a legendary figure at Nintendo, stated the company prefers a distinct path regarding AI compared to other game developers. In contrast, EA’s CEO described AI as central to their business model. However, Miyamoto emphasized Nintendo’s desire to carve out its unique identity.

In an interview with The New York Times, Miyamoto highlighted AI as an area where Nintendo chooses a different approach. “It might seem like we’re going the opposite direction merely for the sake of it, but we’re truly exploring what makes Nintendo unique,” he explained.

Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa echoed similar sentiments in July, acknowledging AI’s creative potential while emphasizing the importance of intellectual property rights. He noted that Nintendo’s success stems from years of expertise in crafting exceptional gaming experiences, which cannot be replicated solely through technology.
