PlayStation 5 players who finished Death Stranding 2: On the Beach have spotted an unexpected name in the credits: Nintendo.
The credit specifically names Nintendo Pictures, the motion capture studio acquired and rebranded by the Mario creator in 2022.
This marks the first instance of Nintendo Pictures contributing to a non-Nintendo title since the acquisition, and as VGC notes, there’s likely a clear explanation.
Development of Death Stranding 2 began in 2022, coinciding with Nintendo’s purchase of the studio, formerly Dynamo Pictures. The game’s reveal trailer at The Game Awards 2022 showcased scenes featuring Norman Reedus and Lea Seydoux, likely captured using motion capture technology.
It’s plausible that Nintendo Pictures, then Dynamo Pictures, was contracted for the project before the acquisition and continued its work as per the agreement. The studio previously contributed to the original Death Stranding, suggesting its involvement was secured early on.
Nintendo Pictures staff credited on Death Stranding 2 include a motion capture director, several motion capture editors, coordinators, and an advisor.
Since its acquisition, Nintendo Pictures has primarily focused on in-house projects like Super Mario Bros. Wonder, Pikmin 4, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. Whether it will take on additional non-Nintendo projects remains uncertain.
