Nexon and Blizzard Sign New Deal: Overwatch Mobile Still in Play

By DylanMay 05,2025

The possibility of Overwatch making its way to mobile devices has been a topic of speculation for some time, particularly after Jason Schreier's book revealed that a mobile version was shelved. However, a recent agreement between Korean developer Nexon and Blizzard has reignited hopes for an Overwatch mobile release.

The primary focus of this deal centers on securing the publishing and development rights for a new installment in the iconic StarCraft RTS franchise. The competition was intense, with other notable companies like Krafton and Netmarble reportedly vying for the opportunity. If confirmed, Nexon will take the helm in steering future entries in this beloved series.

What has sparked the most interest, though, are reports suggesting that the bidding also included the publishing rights for an Overwatch mobile game. This development not only implies that the mobile port is still alive but also hints at the possibility of it being an official sequel in the form of a MOBA.

Nerf thisThis wouldn't be the first foray of Overwatch into the MOBA genre, as fans might recall Heroes of the Storm, which Blizzard once heavily promoted. There's a possibility that Heroes of the Storm could be adapted for mobile, and this might be what the proposed Overwatch MOBA actually is.

Alternatively, a spin-off release is equally plausible. However, it's important to clarify that the notion of an 'Overwatch 3' can be safely dismissed, given the franchise's traditional focus on console and PC platforms.

Adopting a MOBA format could prove advantageous for Overwatch, especially with emerging competitors like Marvel Rivals poised to challenge its market position. This might be the opportune moment for Blizzard and their publishing partners to take bold steps to revitalize this once-thriving franchise.
