Nathan Fillion's Green Lantern: A 'Jerk' in Gunn's Superman Film

By HarperMar 25,2025

James Gunn's upcoming reboot of the DC Cinematic Universe brings with it a fresh take on Superman, and alongside him, Nathan Fillion's unique portrayal of Green Lantern, specifically Guy Gardner. In a recent interview with TV Guide, Fillion described his character as unapologetically abrasive. "He's a jerk!" he exclaimed, emphasizing that being a Green Lantern doesn't require goodness, just fearlessness. Gardner embodies this to the fullest, often choosing the most selfish and self-serving actions, which Fillion finds liberating to play.

Fillion also highlighted Gardner's overconfidence, humorously noting that his character believes he could take on Superman, despite the obvious mismatch. This hubris adds another layer to Gardner's complex persona.

The new Superman film marks the beginning of the DCU's "Gods and Monsters" chapter, slated for release on July 11, 2025. The cast includes David Corenswet as Clark Kent, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Milly Alcock as Supergirl, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, with James Gunn at the helm as writer and director.

Beyond the film, the Green Lanterns are garnering attention elsewhere in the DC universe. HBO is currently filming a series called "Lanterns," featuring Kyle Chandler as Hal Jordan and Aaron Pierre as John Stewart, set to premiere in 2026.

As anticipation builds for Gunn's new vision of the DC Universe, fans are eager to see how these iconic characters will be reimagined on both the big and small screens.
